BIO
I am a London-based artist who graduated from City and Guilds with an MA in Fine Art in 2023. During my time there, I developed a fascination with exploring introspective experiences through the creation of psychologically charged, symbolic environments.
STATEMENT
I consider myself to be someone with a sticky brain. A mind that makes the unstoppable conveyer belt of thoughts a rickety machine, one that too often needs oiling. Forever oscillating between optimism and trepidation, alternating who leads the dance. I empty this brain into sketchbooks, making quick scrawls, images and notes to a future self.
One of my inspirations is sci-fi botany, where psychological, metaphorical flora is formed through the warping of reality. Through distorting and combining pictures of healing/toxic plants, microbiology, animals and the human, my own strange imagery forms.
These morphed symbols swim in fantastical landscapes. Trees’s dissolve, socks become sea urchins, flowers breath, skies mimic oceans. I’m drawn to creating worlds that push against binaries, creating glitches that challenge our perception of what a space is, and fundamentally what are life experiences are.
Drawing from these ideas, I plan paintings on paper in Indian ink. I allow the aliveness of water to participate, forcing me to let go of control. Accident and chance holding equal importance. Lathering it in water, I apply fluid acrylics and water colour pigments. Working at speed, brushing, pouring, spattering. Catching the forms as they reveal themselves.
Alternating opacity of oils, I world build. It’s a push and pull between the final image and the surface. As the painting develops, my subconscious participates, and I race to catch up with its significance.
The paintings are little worlds: balanced on the fringe of reality and imagination. Worlds that ride on the edge of cynicism and beauty, certainty never in reach.
Throughout the fog, a hazy luminosity persists. Inviting the viewer to take off their shoes, step in and come play.
An invitation that could be sinister or safe. Or both?
Sometimes I don’t know if they’re the same thing.
